Hell Is Paperwork
Paperwork Is A Curse
A Curse You Can Break
To Get Your ‘Happy Ever After’
A new story, woven from a tapestry of oral history
‘We fell so far.’
‘Yes, gravity still seems to be working, unlike everything else around here.’
Loosely based on recently-unearthed Bavarian folk tales collated by Franz Schönwerth in the 1850s, this brand new, darkly comic tale of living and dying, of peasants and royalty, of wishes, actions and consequences, makes ordinary fairytales blush, and will challenge your concept of heroes and villains.
So, what if the Devil actually wanted you to have your Happy Ever After, and what if you just kept screwing it up? When an adventurous prince and an ‘elevated’ princess suddenly find themselves in the Devil’s waiting room, they discover the most important truth:
Hell is paperwork.
Sarah Case
Writer
Having worked in education for over twenty years, Sarah started writing and directing for children and young adults but has since become an award winning director for Leeds Gilbert and Sullivan Society. Her passion is bringing hilarious, heartwarming musical theatre to life. She took her first step into writing with A Nice Dilemma which premiered in 2018 to audiences across West Yorkshire - weaving a new story based on the well known characters of Gilbert and Sullivan's works.
Devil May Care is her first full length musical with all original tracks. Sarah has written the book and lyrics alongside her long term friend and composer, Matthew Oglesby.
Matthew Oglesby
Composer
Matthew has followed the path of music composition throughout his life, from early childhood as a chorister at Blackburn Cathedral, through his studies and into the world of professional music-making. He is primarily known as a composer of choral music and in particular his first major work for orchestra and choir Penthos, which premiered in 2018 at Leeds Minster.
He joined the Leeds Gilbert and Sullivan Society in 2009 where over time he met everyone involved in bringing Devil May Care to reality. It was after Sarah Case's ingenious reimagining of G&S songs in A Nice Dilemma that he realised she would be perfect to create a new work with... and she didn't immediately say no, so here we are.

What to expect:
Before the audition:
- Choose a character or characters based on the information given below. You can audition for more than one role.
- Fill in the sign-up form on the Hats Off Productions website. You'll be able to tell us about your prior experience and training, and let us know of any potential schedule conflicts during the production period, including for the audition date itself (22 March). Tell us if you're going to attend the workshop on 8 March.
- We'll send you a link to audition materials, which will include a score, section of lib and demo tracks you can use to practise for the audition.
- With plenty of notice, we'll let you know your audition slot (and if it's not on the main audition day, the date!). Tell us asap if you need to change it. We'll do our best to accommodate reasonable requests.
At the audition:
- Make sure you know where the venue is and how to get there. Arrive about 10 minutes before your slot.
- The panel will consist of the Director, Musical Director and a member of the Leeds G&S Society committee. There will, of course, also be an accompanist.
- You may sing a section of your song or the whole thing — whichever allows you to deliver your best performance and give us the best impression of your ability.
- A member of the panel will read in any other characters in the dialogue section.
- We'll ask you about the character, how you interpret the role and what you think you can bring to it. You can also ask us any questions you have about the show and the production.
- We may ask you to sing some basic range exercises to hear your voice in more scenarios.
- That's it. Your audition shouldn't last longer than 10 minutes.
After the audition:
- If you're successful, we'll advise you of the next steps, including rehearsal schedule and important dates for your diary.
- The auditions are open to anyone, so cast members do not need to be members of Leeds G&S Society.
- All cast members pay a show fee. Details will be provided when appropriate.
Let us know early if you think you will struggle to pay any membership or show fees. We try hard to make sure nobody is prevented from auditioning or participating in our productions simply due to the expense of fees. For further advice, email contactus@hatsoffproductions.org.uk.
